About the project
At Burst Point presents photographic renderings of pyrotechnic displays, revealing the intricate chemical reactions and evolving light at the moment of explosion.
Over the course of three months, I studied and observed the launching techniques used by professionals at Chicago’s Navy Pier, photographing the displays from a thirty-story building. I timed each exposure to capture the patterns, often waiting for smoke and clouds to clear.
By inverting the tonalities, the images become conceptual renderings of energy and light, and an aesthetic response to the enduring allure of fireworks, a spectacle enjoyed since 7th century China.
