About the project
Colorfields: Landscapes of Progress is a photographic exploration inspired by the Color Field paintings of Mark Rothko and Richard Diebenkorn, focusing on abstract areas of color and tonal variations.
The project is based on aerial photographs of salt pans and evaporation ponds in the United States, captured from helicopters and Cessna airplanes. These vantage points reveal the vast scale of human-altered landscapes, where industrial activity meets natural terrain. I manipulated these images to exaggerate colors, blending optimism with pessimism about the effects of human progress.
The resulting images are abstract yet grounded in reality, inviting viewers to reflect on our relationship with the Earth and the technologies we use to control it.
